LegaXy, IIM Lucknow and Cricketer Bhuvneshwar Kumar Launch India’s First Sports and Gaming Startup Accelerator

StartUp News Desk

The sports and gaming entrepreneurship ecosystem in India is set to receive a massive push, with LegaXy Venture Partners announcing the launch of a dedicated Sports and Gaming Accelerator. This initiative, in association with IIM Lucknow, will have Indian cricketer Bhuvneshwar Kumar as its mentor. The accelerator will nurture and fund early-stage startups working in sports technology, esports, and gaming infrastructure, performance analytics, fan engagement platforms, merchandising, and fitness technology.

This partnership brings together academic and research excellence from IIM Lucknow, entrepreneurial and capital support from LegaXy Venture Partners, and sports leadership and grassroots credibility through celebrated fast-bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. This is one of the first structured accelerator programs in India totally focused on the sports and gaming sectors—segments that have seen tremendous growth but with limited institutional access and commercialization pathways.

Tapping Into a Rapidly Growing Market

Sports technology and gaming in India have grown exponentially over the last ten years. With the rise of the Indian Premier League, increasing esports tournaments, fantasy sports platforms, and an active fitness culture, this has created avenues for newer technology-driven solutions. On the other hand, India is now one of the biggest active markets in terms of online gaming, with millions of active users on mobile esports and competitive gaming platforms every day.

Yet, despite the size of the audience, the startup ecosystem in this segment faces challenges: limited funding, lack of structured mentorship from sports professionals, and unclear market access channels. The new accelerator aims to bridge these gaps.

“With the sports and gaming economy maturing in India, there is a tremendous need to back founders who are building for the next stage of growth,” said LegaXy in its announcement. “This accelerator will help startups access capital, mentorship, and real industry networks.”

Strong Mentorship and Industry Access Network

The program is designed to offer early-stage startups an intensive 12–16-week support structure. Among other seed capital opportunities with LegaXy, startups selected into the accelerator will receive:

Interaction with IIM Lucknow faculty members and research labs

Hands-on mentorship by athletes, coaches, and sports management professionals

Market pilots with sports academies, leagues, schools, and media partners

Brand development, product commercialization, and scaling end

This mentorship structure is particularly important for sports startups, which very often demand insights into real player experience, performance environments, talent management, fan psychology, and how a league works.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who will play a leading role in the mentorship wing, highlighted founder support: “Athletes train with discipline, persistence, and strategic guidance. Startups need the same foundations. If we want India to become a global leader in sports innovation, we must give young entrepreneurs the right environment and networks.”

Encouragement of Innovation Beyond the Field

This accelerator reflects both how sports is consumed and monetized, increasingly in a digital manner. On one hand, fan engagement is becoming increasingly digital with the use of influencer collaborations, interactive apps, virtual merchandise, NFTs, and fantasy gaming platforms. On the other hand, the trend in sports performance training is applying data-driven wearable sensors, biomechanical mapping, and AI analytics.

The program looks to foster startups in performance enhancement and engagement and entertainment categories, bearing in mind that the sports economy today is not just about tournaments on the field but also about narratives of fandom, community, and interactive digital experiences.

India’s Moment in Global Sports Entrepreneurship

Globally, sports-tech accelerators have created some success stories in the US, Europe, and Australia, while India has so far lacked a structured equivalent despite being one of the world’s most passionate sports markets. The LegaXy–IIM Lucknow Accelerator may be the forerunner required for India to emerge as an epicenter of innovation in areas as diverse as athlete analytics, fitness gamification, esports content, and sports goods manufacturing.

This collaboration also indicates confidence by institutional players in the potential of sports innovation commercialization. Unlike entertainment startups, sports startups are bound to have longer monetization cycles. For this reason, long-term growth cannot be sustained without institutional support.

Looking Ahead

Applications are expected to open shortly for the accelerator, with the first cohort likely to comprise 10-15 startups; graduation will mark a Demo Day where investors, franchise owners, leagues, corporates, and media firms will assess participating ventures. As sports culture continues to deepen in India, influenced by the youth demography, smartphone adoption, and growing success of Indian athletes at global stages, these initiatives may shape the next generation of sports entrepreneurs. The LegaXy–IIM Lucknow–Bhuvneshwar Kumar accelerator brings academia, capital, and athletic leadership together in a timely and strategic step toward unlocking India’s sports innovation potential.
