Groww Expands into Commodities Trading, Enhancing Investment Options Ahead of IPO

StartUp News Desk

Groww, one of India’s leading investment platforms, has expanded its suite of services with the addition of commodities trading, enabling users to trade in essential commodities like gold, silver, crude oil, and natural gas. This is a strategic expansion intended to offer investors diversified investment options and is also in line with Groww’s overall strategy to widen its financial services offerings.

Details of the Launch

The commodities trading feature is now accessible to Groww users with active trading accounts. Through the platform, users can engage in trading these commodities via the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) between 9:00 AM and 11:30 PM. This extended trading window offers flexibility, especially for working professionals.

To start commodity trading, customers first need to enable Futures & Options (F&O) trading on their Groww account. Once enabled, they can easily access the commodities tab within the application, where they can see live prices, market directions, and make trades.

Strategic Rationale

This foray into commodity trading is in line with Groww’s plans to expand its products and meet changing investor requirements. With the addition of commodities to its platform, Groww hopes to equip users with tools to hedge against inflation and market volatility. Commodities such as crude and gold tend to have price action that is different from traditional equities and can prove useful for portfolio diversification.

Market Context

With the entry into commodities trading, Groww finds itself in competition with strong players in the Indian market, including Zerodha, which has been dealing in commodity trading since 2015. Zerodha entered the commodities space through its subsidiary, Zerodha Commodities Pvt. Ltd., following the acquisition of membership with the MCX and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX).

As of 2024, Groww has overtaken Zerodha in active clients, with more than 11.5 million customers, making it India’s largest stock broker.

Future Outlook

In the future, Groww aims to continue to develop its platform further with the addition of features and services. This involves the imminent launch of a wealth management product, after it acquired Fisdom, a Bengaluru-based wealth management firm. The acquisition, which was approved by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), is Groww’s formal foray into the wealth management business, widening its reach beyond its current investment offerings.

Groww’s entry into commodity trading indicates its focus on offering a holistic portfolio of investment opportunities to its customers. By incorporating commodities into its platform, Groww believes that it can equip investors with the ability to manage various market situations and reach their investment objectives. As the company continues to develop and grow its portfolio, it is poised to be a leading force in determining the future of retail investing in India.
