In a bid to strengthen India’s biotechnology industry, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has collaborated with Thermo Fisher Scientific to introduce the BioVerse Challenge. The national challenge will develop more than 500 high-growth biotech startups over the next three years with a vision to grow to 1,000 startups per year by the year 2030.
Powering India’s Biotech Ecosystem
The BioVerse Challenge is aimed at offering end-to-end support to early-stage biotech startups in India. The scheme will target startups operating in areas like biopharma, med-tech, agri-tech, food tech, and allied bio-based sectors. With this tie-up, the startups will have access to cutting-edge technologies, mentorship, and investor networks in line with the government’s vision to create a $300 billion bioeconomy by 2030.
Main Elements of the BioVerse Challenge
- BioVerse Challenge
A national competition to discover and incubate 100 high-potential biotech startups. These chosen startups will get extensive mentoring, subsidized access to R&D infrastructure, and investor backing to propel their journey from prototype to product.

- Genome Valley Facilities
Thermo Fisher Scientific’s new Customer Experience Center (CEC) and Bioprocess Design Center (BDC) in Genome Valley, Hyderabad, will be centers of R&D activity, mentorship, and startup acceleration efforts. These facilities are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
Strategic Significance of the Collaboration
This partnership with DPIIT and Thermo Fisher Scientific reflects the government’s intent to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in biotech. Fusing Thermo Fisher’s international expertise with Startup India’s wide innovation network, the BioVerse Challenge seeks to drive innovation pipelines and enhance product-driven biotech solutions for India’s challenges.
Long-Term Vision
The BioVerse Challenge is more of a long-term plan rather than a short-term plan to develop India’s biotech ecosystem. With a vision to expand the program to enable 1,000 startups per year by 2030, the collaboration is also intended to make India a global centre for biotechnology innovation. Startups under the program will have access to an ecosystem of mentors, investors, and industry players, leveraging the connections and know-how they need to thrive in the competitive biotech space.
